Scary, but true

Posted by Suzie Lane at

Parents are busy with their jobs, endless household chores, attending games and recitals, and on and on and on. But many parents deeply desire a level of Christian development for their children and youth, some hope to raise caring and committed Christians. How can the church reach well-intentioned parents to bring them into the life of the church, and why should the church even try? In George Barna's research for Revolutionary Parenting, he says, "If we want to raise children who love God passionately and put God first, then we need to love God passionately and put God first. Kids learn what we...

The Year without VBS

There was a small construction project at the church scheduled for the summer months and our long-time Vacation Bible School Director was stepping down more than a little burned out. I was serving on the Christian Education Committee and we wrestled with what to do about VBS for children’s ministry. I think it was less about the construction project (we could have worked around it) and more about the burned-out director and a little late in the year to find a new one. Should we cancel VBS this year? It certainly was an option but the LOGOS Leadership Team decided to take...

“LOGOS is the best thing I’ve ever seen!” said the 70ish man giving me a ride to the Milwaukee airport Thursday afternoon. I had spent about 24 hours with the people of Sun Prairie United Methodist Church (Sun Prairie, WI) to attend their LOGOS End of Year Celebration and to help recognize the 17 years that Deb Mulhern has invested as director of their ministry. Deb told the 200+ people of all ages gathered in the sanctuary that she started LOGOS because she wanted it for her three sons. And now that time is done and she is stepping into...

What does it take to pass on the faith to the next generation? The professional church educator? Parents? Grandparents? The faith community? Dave Csinos (of Faith Forward) suggests that the key lies in the stories of faith that we tell. And we all have a story, don't we? Read about it here in his blog post, "We Already Have All that We Need."  How does your faith community encourage all to tell their faith story? Do you encourage young people to tell theirs? With intergenerational ministry, we believe the "passing" goes both ways. How well do we provide time and...

2 New Sites for Christian Education Help

Looking for some great resources and ideas for your intergenerational faith community? Kathy Dawson, Associate Professor of Christian Education at Columbia Theological Seminary (Decatur, GA), recently announced two web-based Christian education resources. Hope4ce.net is described as a place where innovative ideas and lesson plans can be shared for Christian Education. There is also a companion Facebook group called "Hope4CE." Kathy shares that Hope4CE was an idea that emerged from conversations she's had with church educators over the last few years. A student of hers wondered what small membership churches (or churches with small Christian education budgets) do when they can't afford published...
