Are you growing or shrinking?

Immersed in three days of learning is always a treat (something I didn't appreciate as much years ago). Those of you who attend conferences know the learning doesn't just happen in the workshop or at the plenary session (though certainly there!). Attending the e-Formation Conference at Virginia Theological Seminary alone meant I ate with strangers for the most part and yet was struck by fascinating conversation and connections (and learning!) over every single meal--and walks across the seminary campus to and from the meals. I bumped into a few people I know (check out Rev. Casey Wait FitzGerald's biblical storytelling blog...

The Year without VBS

There was a small construction project at the church scheduled for the summer months and our long-time Vacation Bible School Director was stepping down more than a little burned out. I was serving on the Christian Education Committee and we wrestled with what to do about VBS for children’s ministry. I think it was less about the construction project (we could have worked around it) and more about the burned-out director and a little late in the year to find a new one. My first LOGOS training was about 20 (really?) years ago. I was stepping into the role of LOGOS Director at my church and arrived at the training nervous, unsure and alone. For an introvert, those aren’t the best conditions for a great experience. But it was an amazing experience. I remember one training leader sharing that she arrived late because her daughter, who thought she didn’t want to be...

“LOGOS is the best thing I’ve ever seen!” said the 70ish man giving me a ride to the Milwaukee airport Thursday afternoon. I had spent about 24 hours with the people of Sun Prairie United Methodist Church (Sun Prairie, WI) to attend their LOGOS End of Year Celebration and to help recognize the 17 years that Deb Mulhern has invested as director of their ministry. Deb told the 200+ people of all ages gathered in the sanctuary that she started LOGOS because she wanted it for her three sons. And now that time is done and she is stepping into...

All God’s Children: The Church Family Gathers for Lent

Many faith communities are discovering the joy when all ages join together on the spiritual journey. The mingling of innocence and maturity, playfulness and reverence creates a bold and bigger vision of the church as the body of Christ. Intergenerational events provide opportunities for building relationships with God, relationships with the church community, and a chance to open wide the arms of Christ to every person. Church programs often separate people by age for education and fellowship activities. GenOn Ministries has created “All God’s Children: The Church Family Gathers” series to meet the need for generations to learn and grow together,...
