How will you do Lent?
Posted by Liz Perraud at
How will you experience Lent in your church this year and include multiple generations? Not just people of a span of ages in the building at the same time--or even in the same room--but gathered to build relationships with one another. Intentionally. Could you hold an Ash Wednesday worship service that is experiential and engaging where children and youth are not only participants but leaders as well? How about a gathering around the table for a shared meal (midweek dinner or Saturday breakfast or Sunday lunch) with wondering questions about scriptures where anyone can ask and anyone can answer? If you have...

A World Filled with Thriving Christian Communities

“We started LOGOS with a ‘soft launch’—only doing two of the elements (Family Time and Bible Study) until we have more buy-in. We have very few children in our small church, but we want to build relationships between the children and the adults. We had 50 people come to the first night…seven of which were children. There was a child at each table with adults surrounding that child and sharing and caring for them. My congregation has never been so excited about an event! I've been getting phone calls all day about how much the members enjoyed everything! It's a new...

Angles of the Loard
Posted by Liz Perraud at
I’ve written before about my LOGOS middle school Bible study class (Middle Schoolers and Politics). Last night we discussed the story of Jesus’ birth. We sat around a long table and on a large piece of paper I drew a line across the center to begin a timeline. I was corrected that it was an event line, not a timeline, because I wasn’t planning to include dates. Using the event line, I asked them to share what they already knew about the story of Jesus’ birth. The first person said they came to Bethlehem for the “count.” “Who is they?”...

Introducing GenOn's New Training Coordinator
Posted by Liz Perraud at
Joining the GenOn Ministries staff this fall, Betsy Dishman will be serving as Training Coordinator. Having served in various churches for decades, Betsy is currently on staff at Olivet Presbyterian Church in Charlottesville, Virginia as Director of Music and Children’s Ministries where she directs their Kids’ Connection (LOGOS) Ministry and leads Worship Arts. She has also led retreats for families, directed music conferences, served as worship leader for special events, and volunteered for local and international mission trips. Betsy and her husband, Keith, live in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, enjoying time with their adult sons, Zach and Jacob. They...
Middle Schoolers and Politics
Posted by Liz Perraud at
After our opening prayer, we began with a discussion about what "discourse" means ("off course?" "against the course?"), both intelligent guesses for an unfamiliar word. No...just conversation or discussion (though "debate" could be used as well). And then a few minutes to explain "civil discourse." My lesson plan for the middle schoolers during Bible Time at LOGOS was scrapped in favor of letting them talk about the previous day's presidential election. But we needed to set some ground rules first. I reminded them of the one rule of LOGOS: Treat everyone as a child of God and not as if...
