Unit 1: God's Promise Is Born
4 sessions. Participants learn about Advent as a season for remembering God’s dreams for the world through Jesus. The stories of Jesus’ birth in Matthew and Luke are used to identify Jesus as the fulfillment of God’s covenant promise, and the way God promised to reveal God’s self to all people everywhere. Making Advent wreaths and singing carols help participants to learn about the birth of Jesus. Sessions:

  1. Advent Hopes and Dreams (Isaiah 9:6-7, Isaiah 11:6-9, Jeremiah 31:31-32)
  2. Matthew’s Story of Jesus (Matthew 1:18-25, 2:1-12)
  3. Luke’s Story of Jesus (Luke 1:26-38, 2:1-20)
  4. Christmas Joy (Matthew 1:18-2:12, Luke 2:1-20)
    Unit 2: We Love As God Loves Us
    4 sessions. Participants explore New Testament Scriptures about love and are reminded of God’s love for them, that God is love, and that God calls us to love others. Participants learn about the fruit of the Spirit from Galatians and ways to share those fruits. Sessions:
    1. God Loves Me (1 John 4:19)
    2. The Gifts of the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-17, 22-26)
    3. The Greatest Gift (1 Corinthians 13)
    4. Loving Others (1 John 4:7-21)
      Unit 3: Responding to the Word
      4 sessions. Participants reflect on responding to God’s Word through prayer and gifts. Participants explore The Lord’s Prayer and discuss its meaning for their lives and the lives of others. The sessions on gifts study those gifts that God gives the world, the generosity of God’s people, and the significance of sharing talents with others. Sessions:
      1. Asking for What We Need (Matthew 6:9-13, Luke 11:1-4)
      2. Seeking Help for Others (Matthew 6:9-13, Luke 11:1-4)
      3. Dedicating Gifts to God (2 Corinthians 8:1-7)
      4. Giving Ourselves to God (Romans 12:1-8)
