Sunday LIFT Year 2 Summer Elijah

The dramatic stories of the prophet Elijah occur in a troubled time for God’s people. They are ruled by the cruel King Ahab and his wife Jezebel. The Israelites are led further away from God by Ahab. Ahab builds a temple to Baal and puts up an altar to the Canaanite god in the Temple in Jerusalem. Baal is believed to control rain and subsequently the success or failure of crops.

During their suffering, God sent God’s special representative, Elijah, to remind people of God’s will and God’s teachings. Elijah was called by God to confront King Ahab and tell him about God’s judgment: because of Ahab’s sin there would be no more rain in the land until God allowed it.

To provide for Elijah during this time of drought and for Elijah’s escape from an angry Ahab, God sent him to safe places to receive the food and water and safety he needed. Elijah was later called upon by God to challenge the 450 priests of Baal and with God’s help, discredits them. Elijah then encounters the true God in a wilderness event.
