Engaging with Young People

By Rev. Thom Lamb, Grace Presbyterian Church, Temple, TX I will never forget when Robert came and asked if I would accompany him for the talent show at what was then known as LOGOS Conference East. I was happy to help and one afternoon we sat down to practice. It did not go well. Robert could barely carry a tune and he wanted to sing the song, Friends by Michael W. Smith. I really tried to convince him to sing something a little more in his range, but Robert was insistent, and I was fearful that he would embarrass himself....

Is LOGOS with Youth Different than LOGOS with Children?

Posted by Liz Perraud at

By Liz Perraud, Executive Director, GenOn Ministries LOGOS with middle schoolers and high schoolers is different than with children. And yet it's not. The WHY of LOGOS is the same for any age-because we believe that an abundant life-giving relationship with God through Jesus Christ is more important than anything else. The WHAT that results from LOGOS is also the same--a relationship with God and Christ-centered relationships with others. It's the HOW that varies depending on the age level. One of the structural "bones" [read more on LOGOS bones here] of an effective LOGOS ministry is "YOUTH INVOLVEMENT" and defined: Intentional participation...

A Bone to Pick

By Betsy Dishman, Training Coordinator, GenOn Ministries Bones...a term of endearment to churches with LOGOS ministries, but admittedly insider language. What does an excellent design for ministry with children and youth have to do with bones? Historically, (after over 50 years of refining LOGOS ministry you can use that word) the bones gave churches a structure for their programs; flexible, but never to be broken. Currently, GenOn Ministries recognizes that bones come in all shapes and sizes, and are unique to each individual. Likewise, LOGOS Bones, while still the structure, look different from church to church, small to large, urban...

Partnering with families in faith formation

One of my favorite rooms on a LOGOS evening is the kitchen. There's a buzz about that place-I've seen it in churches all over no matter the size of the program or the sophistication of the meals. In my church we've had a year of a busted dishwasher, a broken hot water heater, hurt (and healed!) feelings, deeply personal stories, and rounds of the flu. Too many people some nights and not enough people other nights. And yet there's a common purpose (to deliver dinner on time!) and always a welcoming atmosphere for those seeking a place to serve at...

If Wednesday is the new Sunday then what does that mean for Christian education?

Posted by Liz Perraud at

There was a day when schools and communities guarded Wednesday night as “church night.” Rarely were school sports practices or evening events scheduled. And then there wasn’t that day. Maybe the practice was more of a Bible Belt thing—most common in the south and midwest states. Growing up in the DC area I have no memory of Wednesday night reserved for religious reasons and it certainly wasn’t the case for my children. We all know about the gradual erosion of Sunday morning as “sacred” time. About 20 years ago, our soccer club ruled that no game would start prior to...
