Shoeless friends taught me a life-long lesson

Posted by Liz Perraud at

By Beth Fratzke, Peace Presbyterian Church, Elkhorn, Neb. Karen Lea Kirschhoffer had a gift. She could make an instant connection with a child or youth of any age. We all have what it takes to connect with kids -- it just takes some of us a little longer or requires a bit more effort. Karen could make friends with kids in a heartbeat. Years ago, when my daughter was not yet 3, she and I went to church. The moment we sat down in the pew, Julia kicked off her patent leather Mary Janes and tossed them under the pew in...

Road Trip: Connections in the Car

Each Wednesday, I pick up Mary and Neera for LOGOS and then take them home afterward. Their mother doesn't drive, and their father's work schedule prevents him from taking them to or from LOGOS. The girls really wanted to come to LOGOS, and so a bit reluctantly I agreed to drive them each week. In the car, we chat about their day at school (kindergarten and first grade) -- what they're reading and what they played at recess. We also talk about the night's theme and menu for LOGOS (I'm in charge of the meals!). I don't see them during LOGOS. So...

"What I Wish I Knew When I Started Youth Ministry" is from guest blogger Betsy Hanzelin on Jan Edmiston's Church for Starving Artists blog. Intergenerational faith formation isn’t just about the kids. Passing on the faith is not always about passing DOWN the faith, sometimes it’s about passing it up. Don’t believe me? Read what my 81 year old friend Bill Gretsch says about his experience with intergenerational faith formation. “I take pictures at LOGOS.  I always look in at the preschool and see the kids playing, sleeping or being comforted.  The love given by the leaders is unconditional and a model for living.  Glorious! I eat dinner with the youngest children, and it brings back to me when I helped raise my own family. ...

I like reminders! And I need reminders. I put lots of notes on my calendars (both paper and electronic), on my iPhone “to do” list, sticky notes here and there around my desk and on my kitchen cabinets. I have a Bible app that prods me to read each day (again and again).   I especially like reminders of another sort—stories or even commercials that remind me that God wants us to know it’s important to care for and about one another. Good, healthy relationships. And especially the intergenerational kind. Here’s my latest favorite commercial. I showed it for our...
