Faith formation at home

By Laura Sambito, Highlands United Presbyterian Church, Jacksonville, Fl How can I help them always remember that God loves them? I'm sure every parent has asked this question at least a time or two. As a mom of two young boys and church educator to about 50 more young people, I have spent many hours contemplating this question. So, when our LOGOS schedule allowed for adding a designated "Worship Skills" time, I wanted it to be focused on more than just music, which has been our norm. In the fall, our children learned about the liturgical calendar, parts of worship,...

Worship Arts: A Blessed Morning

By Betsy Dishman, Director of Music and Children’s Ministry, Olivet Presbyterian Church It’s Sunday, and the children are singing in worship. The scouts have gone camping, an out-of-town wedding claimed two flower girls, a birthday party was happening, and a few families probably forgot. Every child did not sing on pitch, a couple of enthusiastic children joined in who don’t attend our mid-week ministry, and one child fell off the chancel step. It was a blessed morning! Blessing #1: A mom has been visiting with her girls, and her husband joined her on the pew for the first time. Blessing...

GenOn Ministries is a proponent of all ages in worship, and not just as passive observers but engaged and leading. However, there are good reasons why many faith communities choose to offer “parallel learning” for the youngest children during some of worship, particularly the sermon. She offers, as an example, a letter to...

A Ringing Success

I'm in the church hand bell choir because a friend asked me to join. Carrie is our LOGOS director, and she got bells switched to Wednesday nights to follow LOGOS so that more people might join. And they have.  We are a mix of LOGOS volunteers with a history of ringing (so patient with newcomers), veteran ringers who arrive after LOGOS (so patient with newcomers), musically talented youth (so patient with newcomers), and me (the newcomer). We also have a patient and encouraging director.  I'm not "musical" - unless spoons count. But I love music. And if I concentrate really hard on...

Teach them to sing

Posted by Liz Perraud at

I love to sing. Let me clarify. I love to sing in a very large group or in the car by myself. I think I was a better singer as a child. I must have been because I tried out for and made Folksingers when I was in fourth grade. We sang cool songs like Mr. Bojangles and Feelin’ Groovy (when they were brand new radio hits!). I also sang in the church choir (with adults!) around that same time. I think it’s a rule though that they had to take everyone, especially in a small church. I’ve always thought of...
