Threads Within is GenOn's new resource to help church leaders support families in everyday faith.
The call to community begins with the love of Christ. When Jesus says in John 13:34, “Love one another,” he invites us to become a living sign of grace, not only within our churches, but also among the neighbors God has placed around it.
This kind of love begins with prayerful attention, humble listening, and a willingness to be present.
Prayerfully Map Your Connections
Gather a few leaders or ministry team members and place the church at the center of a simple map. Add nearby schools, residents, businesses, nonprofits, civic groups, apartment communities, and other faith communities.
As you look at the map, give thanks for the relationships that already exist. Notice where connections are strong, where they are thin, and where the Spirit may be inviting the church to listen more deeply.
Notice the Neighborhood with Holy Attention
Invite the congregation to take a prayer walk, listening walk, or slow drive through the neighborhood. Encourage people to move gently and pay attention before seeking answers.
What causes them to give thanks? What stirs compassion? Where do they see care, need, resilience, beauty, or hope? Such noticing can become an act of prayer.
Pray and Discern the Next Faithful Step
Afterward, gather as leaders or as a congregation for a simple Examen. Give thanks for signs of God’s grace. Reflect honestly on how the church is showing up.
Ask where patience, courage, or deeper listening may be needed. Then pray for the next faithful step to love and serve with the community as a faithful neighbor.
As churches map connections, notice their neighborhoods, and pray over what they discover, Jesus’ command becomes concrete: love one another, right where God has placed the church.
May this love take root in your congregation and bear fruit in the community around you.
As you lead, invite members of your congregation to practice this same exercise where they live.
Encourage them to map their own neighborhood connections, walk their streets with prayerful attention and ask God how they might love their neighbors with humility, presence, and care.
