Two Questions: Roberta J. Egli

Rev. Roberta J. EgliExecutive DirectorMessy Church USA     In each edition of IG Mix, we ask a guest writer two questions about serving in ministry. What keeps you up at night?I lead a ministry focused on the positive quality of being “Messy.” However, when I have trouble sleeping, it is because of my internal struggle to organize the mess that keeps me awake. I am a planner and organizer; I like to create lists that I can mark “done.” Inviting and encouraging others to engage in intergenerational ministry is not a neat and tidy item that is ever “done,”...

Holly AllenAuthorRetired Professor of Family Science and Christian MinistriesLipscomb University, Nashville     In each edition of IG Mix, we ask a guest writer two questions about serving in ministry. What keeps you up at night? Words. Before I sleep, I often consider what I have written that day. Intergenerational ministry is more than faith formation curriculum. It is about infusing the whole church with an ethos—the characteristic spirit of the community guided by its beliefs or ideas. Eventually, this intergenerational spirit impacts everyone and everything. Where to begin? We have identified four ministry areas for the church: worship, study, service, and fellowship. Using our free Snapshot tool with a...

Seminary Corner: Studying with All Generations

Andre Jordan "AJ" WallaceSecond Year StudentPrinceton Seminary Some of the most generative experiences of God revealing Godself to me has occurred in the context of studying and meditating on the text in community. But if I am honest, these occasions of engaging the word have never been with members from every age demographic present in my church communities.  I think much of church liturgy has some element of exclusion baked into it, and we have grown accustomed to the cycles of siloed Bible studies. When it comes to studying the word, we have normalized not having regular rhythms of intergenerational engagement. As someone who believes that the unique context of every person shapes how God reveals Godself in the text, I think we are often missing out on being formed by the diverse members...
