Genuine Intergenerational Relationships: Start with a Name

Liz PerraudExecutive DirectorGenOn Ministries My husband and I walk our oldest grandchild to school most mornings. We live about a half-mile from the elementary school, and it takes about 12 minutes to get there (we’ve timed it). Longer if you pause to inspect caterpillars, Halloween decorations, or bright green cars. Shorter if you run to catch up with Grandpa. As we approach the school, there’s a crossing guard to help us get safely across a busy street. The first week of school, the guard asked our granddaughter her name, and she happily shared it. Every day since...
Moving Those Milestones

Liz PerraudExecutive DirectorGenOn Ministries How many celebrations, recognitions, or special gatherings have I missed since mid-March? Weddings, graduations, birthdays, moves; religious holidays, church trips, dedications, and gatherings; annual conferences, meetings, and Youth Summits. Lots. There’s grief as each one passes and can’t be celebrated or experienced as hoped. What have you missed or experienced in radically different ways during the past few months? Many of these happenings are milestones. Milestones are actions or events that mark something of significance, often a stage in development. We think of recognizing milestones as something accomplished (driver’s license) or reached (50th birthday). A milestone, literally,...

Retreats are excellent settings for growing intergenerational relationships. And, now we have a BRAND NEW resource in our All God’s Children series that is designed for your retreat! ALL GOD’S CHILDREN: THE CHURCH FAMILY GATHERS FOR RETREAT Church programs often separate people by age for education and fellowship activities. A retreat is a unique extended event designed to set aside time for spiritual growth where we leave our usual routine and settle into God’s presence for personal growth, spiritual solace and strengthening relationships. It is a time to surround ourselves with love and grow deeper in our journey with God....

More Than Food

Liz PerraudExecutive DirectorGenOn Ministries The Swedish modern table in our dining room is old. Not antique old, but been-around-a-while old. My parents bought it for their first home in 1956, and they passed it on to my husband and me when we were married in 1983. It’s sturdy and practical and expands to seat many. My mother often tells the story of when I was two and ran smack into the table, resulting in whiplash. There are faint crayon scribbles on it from when my sons were young. Our granddaughter likes to play Hide-and-Go-Seek around it when she...
