Reaching the Community: It's Our Mission

Posted by Liz Perraud at

By Betsy Dishman, Olivet Presbyterian Church, Charlottesville, Va Our LOGOS ministry, called Kids' Connection (KC), includes a mission component as part of our annual master plan. A mission activity is often part of Recreation, when we devote time to creating a mission project that frequently takes more than one week to complete. Rather than choosing new mission opportunities, the KC leaders look to existing church ministries. This approach allows us to partner with other church leaders. When our youth group went to New York City to serve the homeless in January, the children made scarves for them to take and...

Seeking Volunteers?

Posted by Liz Perraud at

Lots of emails are coming in seeking help in staffing for LOGOS this fall. Are you having trouble getting people to “step up to the plate” to serve in any ministry of the church? Let’s get something really clear, they rarely do just “step up”! So we need to find another way to engage people in ministry. Lots of adults--representing many generations. Our goal is not just to staff programs, but to build lots of healthy Christ-centered relationships in our faith community. God didn’t wait for people to come (or even make general pulpit announcements). God called people to come. By...

I am enough

At GenOn Ministries we teach and believe that we are all created in the image of God. Much of that teaching centers around how we treat others--that we are called to treat one another as children of God and that no one has the right to treat others as if they do not matter. Read what Kelly Pittman from Practicing Families (Summer Boredom, Fresh Paint, and New Lessons in Parenting) learned about God when she let go.  All that risk and trust are wrapped up not just in good parenting but in good relationships period. Have you watched our cool 12-minute video that teaches all about Christian relationships? If you're planning for LOGOS (or any other) volunteer training, I suggest showing it. And then together unpack what it means for your work with people of all generations. In the...

Happy Birthday Miss Barb!

Posted by Liz Perraud at

Happy birthday to the best LOGOS head cook I know--Barb Schmehl. Barb turns 82 years old today and she’s been cooking for the children, youth and adults of LOGOS at Christ Memorial Presbyterian Church in Columbia, Maryland for over 15 years. What makes her the “best” cook is not so much the food that she gets on the tables (though that is good), it’s more about the love that she gets on the tables. She adores those kids (“her” kids she calls them) and can’t wait for LOGOS to start each fall and is sad when it ends each spring....
