Children's Moments: Tell (and show!) the story

Posted by Liz Perraud at

In “Postmodern Children’s Ministry” Ivy Beckwith makes the case for no children’s messages/sermons/moments (“most children’s sermons do little to engage the community as a whole”). For those times though when she does participate in traditional children’s sermons she writes, “I’m very careful not to fall into the trap of using symbolic language and abstract ideas. While the adults love the traditional object lesson, most children never make the connection between the nifty science experiment and the spiritual truth it’s supposed to represent. Therefore, I use the children’s sermon to retell the biblical narrative on which the sermon is based.” Artist...

Reaching the Community: It's Our Mission

By Betsy Dishman, Olivet Presbyterian Church, Charlottesville, Va Our LOGOS ministry, called Kids' Connection (KC), includes a mission component as part of our annual master plan. A mission activity is often part of Recreation, when we devote time to creating a mission project that frequently takes more than one week to complete. Holly Allen, Professor of Family Science and Christian Ministry at Lipscomb University addresses the question, “Why bring the generations back together?” following her participation in “The Future of Intergenerational Christian Faith Formation: A National Symposium” in Connecticut in October 2014. I also attended the symposium and left more convinced than ever about the need for intergenerational ministry. Holly writes: "The comprehensive and extensive recent research from Kara Powell, Christian Smith, and David Kinnaman offers strong support for the spiritual benefits of intergenerational Christian experiences and relationships. The findings from Kara Powell’s study of youth group graduates revealed that involvement in...

Seeking Volunteers?

Posted by Liz Perraud at

Lots of emails are coming in seeking help in staffing for LOGOS this fall. Are you having trouble getting people to “step up to the plate” to serve in any ministry of the church? Let’s get something really clear, they rarely do just “step up”! So we need to find another way to engage people in ministry. Lots of adults--representing many generations. Our goal is not just to staff programs, but to build lots of healthy Christ-centered relationships in our faith community. God didn’t wait for people to come (or even make general pulpit announcements). God called people to come. By...
