Finding Lost Kids

Posted by Liz Perraud at

If you’re a teacher, a parent, love kids or have ever been a kid, you need to read John Leggett’s blog post “By Some Miracle of Grace You Became Her Teacher.” At GenOn Ministries, we have always believed in the importance of relationships in teaching (and we’re always teaching, whether we know it or not). The difference that one person can make in the life of a young person (especially) makes an impact for generations to come. Amen.

Salad Days

My favorite thing to do at LOGOS is to serve salad. Every week, no matter what the Family Time theme, we serve salad. Well, not on PJ Night when dinner is breakfast. Everyone agrees that salad doesn't go well with waffles and sausage and syrup.  Instead of putting a bowl of salad on every table to be served family style like the rest of dinner, we make up a huge bowl of tossed salad--mixed greens (those big pre-washed bags), chopped zucchini and tomatoes, croutons and Italian dressing. A Ringing Success

I'm in the church hand bell choir because a friend asked me to join. Carrie is our LOGOS director, and she got bells switched to Wednesday nights to follow LOGOS so that more people might join. And they have.  We are a mix of LOGOS volunteers with a history of ringing (so patient with newcomers), veteran ringers who arrive after LOGOS (so patient with newcomers), musically talented youth (so patient with newcomers), and me (the newcomer). We also have a patient and encouraging director.  I'm not "musical" - unless spoons count. But I love music. And if I concentrate really hard on...

Building Relationships with our Police

Last night was one of my favorite nights of LOGOS at my church, despite the howling winds and torrential rains outside (tornado watch!). We invited some local police to come to dinner with 75 raucous (but lovable) children and their dedicated Table Parents to help us recognize our Family Time (dinner) theme "We love Police Night." They arrived early, were wonderful guests, seemed to enjoy their chicken patties, and engaged with all at their tables. Our creative Dinner Dean had each table play a car chase game with matchbox cars and elbows only. There are our guests in the picture with...

Who says LOGOS is just for kids?

Carole Witt, Opequon Presbyterian Church, Winchester, Va. Officially LOGOS is for children and youth, Kindergarten-12th grade. But we really know that LOGOS is for kids of all ages. High school seniors and senior citizens, too! Calling older adults to a LOGOS staff brings true balance to the program and makes it complete. These incredible older adults add tremendous value through their gifts as greeters, snack providers, transportation providers, homework helpers, kitchen team members, Bible teachers and table parents. Older adults offer sincere wisdom, a sense of security, laughter, patience and peace to LOGOS participants. In return, children often give older adults heartwarming,...
